What Is The God Spot?

In a research by a team of neurologists from University Of California, it was discovered that a tiny area in the frontal lobe of the brain is activated during spiritual activities. It is believed that the small zone of nerve centers has a specific role of communicating with God, thus it is named ‘The God Spot’.

Neurotheology

Neurotheology is a relatively new field with its focus on finding the link between religion or spirituality and the biology of human brain. The discipline is trying to get answers for questions like- ‘are humans hard wired to be religious? Do humans have a direct link to God, and does God have a direct link to humans, embedded in their brains? How does prayer or being religious affect the human brain? Are the effects of religion and prayer visible in the physical structure of the brain?’

The researchers also want to focus on whether a particular religion affects the brain more than others or all the religions affect the brain in similar ways. They want to know if the frequency and length of prayers have any particular impact on the God Spot.

Prayer; Both The Most Common Alternative and The Most Common Accompaniment To Medical Intervention

People of all religions turn to prayers when nothing seems to fall in the right place for them. It’s found that the patients suffering from chronic diseases are more likely to believe in God than in medicine!

Studies are going on to find out if prayers really help in extreme medical conditions or not. But it is very difficult to measure the success of prayers as there is no fixed instrument or method to find its effectiveness.

Prayers Change The Brain

Richard Davidson, a neurologist says, “You can sculpt your brain just as you’d sculpt your muscles if you went to the gym. Our brains are continuously being sculpted, whether you like it or not, willingly or unwillingly.” He is right in saying that our brain restructures itself based on the input we provide. Thus, prayers can have a very significant impact on its working and internal structure.

So, what about the God Spot?

Brick Johnstone says, “Spirituality is complex and recent studies show it involves multiple areas of the brain.”

This is a very complex subject and different studies show different results. But based on these recent studies, we can say that some part of our brain is wired to handle the complex stuff that science fails to understand completely.
