For all the advances medical science has made, it remains a bit of a sore thumb (or shall we say overflowing nose?) that we have no definitive cure to the common cough and cold.

While we all get  lung congestion and inflammation at some point of the year, it might do you some good not to get too dependent on cold remedies. Even the simplest and most common medicine for treating cold can be artificial and have unforeseen long term consequences. Why not try some of these herbs the next time to give your lungs some breathing space?

1. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus leaves have the compound cineole in it which does a lot to ease coughs and clears up the respiratory tract.

2. Licorice Root

Licorice Root soothes the body perfectly because it fights inflammation of the mucous membranes inside your lungs.

3. Osha Root

This native of the Rocky Mountains contains camphor which is a great support for the lungs

4. Thyme

Thyme has anti-bacterial properties which makes thyme tea a great way to fight chest congestion and makes it a regular ingredient in healthy essential oils.

5. Coltsfoot

Native Americans have been using Coltsfoot to clear out the lungs and bronchial tubes in their ancient herbal lore.

6. Mullein

It’s the perfect natural remedy to clear excess mucus from inside the lungs.

7. Peppermint

Menthol in peppermint is a great muscle relaxant and a natural decongestant for the chest. The anti-oxidants in menthol also help fight illnesses.

8. Sage

Not many people know this but the rich aroma of sage is a great way to battle the blockages of the sinuses.

9. Plantain Leaf

Plantain leaf has the curious property of stimulating the mucous production of the lungs. Why would you need that you ask? Well it’s the perfect cure for dry and heaving coughs. There are times when that mucous membrane actually needs to be filled with….well mucous.
