Yoga has been proven to affect the increase the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid, which is associated with better mood and alleviating the symptoms of depression.

American scientists from the Medical School at the Boston University has proven that yoga has a greater positive effect on our mood and levels of depression than any other form of physical exercise, and it’s because it increases the levels of the so called GABA chemical in our brains. Their latest research has shown in greater detail how yoga affects and changes the levels of this chemical.

Scientists were comparing different GABA levels (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain. Low GABA levels are associated with depression and other similar disorders. They observed two test groups of healthy subjects for 12 weeks. One group practiced yoga three times a week for an hour, and the other group took walks at the same time.

Prior to the beginning of the experiment, they took scans of the participants’ brains, and participants had to evaluate their psychological state several times during the 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of exercise, scientists compared GABA levels in both groups.

Participants who practiced yoga have indicated a significant improvement in their general mood and mental state, unlike the walking group. Additionally, GABA levels showed significant increase in participants who did yoga.

The study has shown that yoga affects the increase of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a brain chemical that helps regulate activity of the central nervous system . The levels and effect of this acid is reduced in humans suffering from mood disorders, and they are usually prescribed drugs that improve GABA activity.

The research has shown that GABA levels grow after only one hour of yoga and are associated with a better mood and anxiety reduction.

Scientists claim that practicing yoga stimulates specific areas in the brain, and it stimulates changes in the endogenous antidepressant neurotransmitters like the GABA. They point out that this is a very important discovery whose further research will provide solutions  for dealing with depression, excluding any kind of medication.
